Aboriginal Drop-In Support Service

The Aboriginal Drop-in Support Service is a drop-in support accommodation service for Aboriginal community members and operates in the Shires of Narrabri and Moree Plains. Support is provided within a maximum of 35 hours per week by local Aboriginal staff, to clients between 18 and 65 years of age, with an Intellectual Disability and/or Acquired Brain Injury, to allow them to live independently in their family home or in community housing. The service is provided across the whole region with access being extended to all outlying remote individuals and communities within these regions.

Recognition and respect for Aboriginal Culture and History is pivotal to the structure of the Aboriginal Drop-In Support Service alongside the existing and effective collaborative linkages and networks with Aboriginal families and communities in these Shires.

The main objective of the Aboriginal Drop-In Support Service is to provide support for an individual with a disability in a culturally appropriate way such that they can, according to individual choice, continue to live with their family/career, or independently, or with another client and develop skills that will assist them to live as independently as possible, taking into account their level of support needs.

The service provides friendly and culturally appropriate assistance for skills building in the areas of personal care, healthy living, independent living, helping maintain and develop existing and new support networks within the context of social, peer groups and the family, support and encouragement regarding community activity and involvement, personal finances and budgets and support with accessing and sustaining an appropriate tenancy arrangement and agreement.

The successful development and continuing operation of the Aboriginal Drop-In Support Service has been achieved through active input from the Aboriginal communities in every aspect of the service. This is what makes our service unique, in that the community has had input into the design of the service structure, has been instrumental in the implementation processes, has developed their own clear and appropriate service information and printed material through collaborative arrangements with existing organizations within their communities,  as well as having taken ownership of the day to day operation of their service.
